BENCHMARKING REQUIREMENTS

You may have noticed that Benchmarking has become more popular in recent years, and is catching momentum among local governments as a way to accurately track building and home energy usage. Although still in the early stages, several cities in Florida have officially launched their own Benchmarking programs after passing corresponding energy code ordinances that now require it.

CITY OF MIAMI

If you own a building in the City of Miami and it is larger than 20,000 square feet you will need to adhere to the requirements set forth by the City of Miami’s Benchmarking Ordinance that is currently in effect. The City of Miami's Building Efficiency 305 Benchmarking Program requires buildings above 20,000 square feet to provide and share benchmarking data to the city via EPA's portfolio manager.

Miami Benchmarking Ordinance Compliance

CITY OF ORLANDO

Orlando has unanimously passed the Building Energy and Water Efficiency Strategy (BEWES), which is a policy aimed at tracking the energy and water output of the largest buildings within city limits. At this time the ordinance requires Commercial or Multifamily buildings over 50,000 square feet, as well as city-owned buildings over 10,000 square feet to report their energy usage data. This data after being received is made public, and can be used to analyze the energy usage between buildings of similar sizes. The city hopes this will foster change and persuade building owners to reduce their energy consumption.

At RunBrook we provide assistance with the submittal process and work directly with the city to become compliant in this new program. We know that dealing with the utility to request your electricity consumption data, along with setting up multiple energy star portfolio accounts can be tedious and time consuming. Let us make the process seamless and streamlined so you can quickly come into compliance, avoid any fee’s and not miss your buildings designated deadline.

As part of other green building certifications that we attain for our clients, we have gained extensive knowledge in what is benchmarking and providing appropriate data for any required documentation of a building's energy usage. Our experience includes designing data collection programs and executing those programs to produce customized benchmarking reports.

It may prove challenging for you or your management staff to come into compliance with these deadlines. Accessing and submitting your energy usage will depend on varying levels of complexity based on building type, utility metering & documentation requests.
